ActionSlider: Kill Background Apps, Launch Siri, Takes Screenshot & More [NC Widget]
March 5, 2012 at 12:12 AM

A new feature-rich jailbreak widget ActionSlider for Notification Center has just hit the underground Cydia store which adds power to your slider. ActionSlider gives you two extra muscles (Right Middle, Left Middle) and instead of simply sliding to the right and left, you can slide only the middle of the right or the middle of the left. For each of the four slider positions (center position is non-functional), you can do any of the following actions:

  • Close app – It just imitates the action of Home Button and simply closes the application you have currently opened.
  • Kill app – Forcibly closes and kills the application you have currently opened from the App Switcher
  • Kill background – kills background applications (such as navigation apps like TomTom), but not the application you’re currently in
  • Kill background all – kills everything; the application you’re in and everything running in the background in one fall swoop.
  • Show switcher – opens up the App Switcher
  • Wiggle switcher – puts the App Switcher into jiggle mode so you can kill applications
  • Now playing bar – opens up the App Switcher and displays the iPod controls section
  • Activate Siri – Invoke Siri assistant so you can query something
  • Capture screen – takes a screenshot
  • None – does nothing

Some applications such as Skype and TomTom runs in the background and even when you hit the Home button, these applications keeps on running in the background which can quickly drain your battery life. In such case, ActionSlider tweak comes to your rescue, which allows you to kill all background apps in one fell swoop.

But there could be other application which you want to run them all the time – like when you want to keep your Messages and Mail app running in background. ActionSlider’s setting preferences lets you white list selected applications. This nifty feature comes handy in situation when you choose to kill all applications running in the background except a few white listed one.

Siri can also be launched via this NC widget without straining the home button. To configure any of the actions listed above, simply launch Notification Center and use the knob to drag either left or in right direction. You will then find the four locations where you can add the actions. ActionSlider for Notification Center can be enabled or disabled at any point of time by dragging it in and out of NC from the Notifications preferences pane in the Settings.app.

After you install this tweak, you must activate the new ActionSlider addon.  To enable any NotificationCenter widgets /add-ons, simply go to Settings -> Notifications -> (X). NC widgets are available on devices that are jailbroken and on iOS 5 (5.x) only (with the exception of native widgets that come with iOS 5).

Developed by Merlin Mao, ActionSlider widget is available in Cydia store for $0.99 under the BigBoss repo for jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. We’d recommend you download it, and take it for a spin. If you enjoy spicing upNotificationCenter on your jailbroken iOS device, this is a tweak you don’t want to miss. Do not forget to share your thoughts.

AppSlider Cydia Tweak Adds Shortcuts to Launch iOS Apps from LockScreen
March 4, 2012 at 7:22 PM

Earlier, we showed you how to add quick-launch shortcuts to the iOS Lock screen. Now, an app called AppSlider adds similar capabilities allowing you to customize the iPhone lock screen and making it much more useful than it is “by default”.  With AppSlider cydia tweak, you can add two different application shortcuts to lock screen slider of your iPhone that suits your preferences. These shortcuts will help you make life a little easier on the iPhone.

By cutting-down the slider’s width, AppSlider allows you to add two different custom application icons (one in left and other in place of default camera icon). For example, you can configure Cydia app on the left side of slider, and as soon as you click the cydia icon, application is launched. Similarly, if you need a quick way to call, text or e-mail someone, you must install AppSlider jailbreak Tweak on your device.

AppSlider can only be installed on jailbroken devices and once installed you can add two application shortcuts to either side of the slide to unlock bar via the Settings.app. I really like the idea of being able to add two important applications that I want to do on my iPhone and AppSlider does this very well. It is clean looking, very well done and definitely has some potential.

AppSlider tweak costs $0 and can be downloaded from Cydia store under BigBoss repository. Once you’ve installed on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you’ll be able to quickly phone home, send a message to your friend, or open a favorite app by adding the shortcut you want. It is worth checking out for few days to see if it works for you.

SMSmileys Cydia Tweak Adds Emoji Smileys to Native Messages.app
March 4, 2012 at 1:31 PM

Emoji icons are a fun addition when composing text messages on iPhone or iPad and SMSmileys tweak just fill this gap by adding smileys to the default Messages app. Aimed squarely at teenagers, SMSmileys tweak adds a plethora of Emoji style smileys icons to help make text messages “less dull.” As soon as you text smileys like :) , :’( and </3 are automatically replaced with colorful emoji icons.

Personally, I don’t see the appeal in using emoticons in text messages, but then again I am most likely not part of this app's target audience. In order to download SMSmileys app on your iPhone or iPod touch or iPad, you must first jailbreak your iOS device on iOS 5.0, which can be achieved easily using redsn0w. iPhone 4S users can use Absinthe for iOS 5.0 jailbreak. Once you have jailbroken your device, fire-up cydia, search for SMSmileys tweak and tap the install button. Re-spring or reboot your iPhone and you're done. Alternatively, you can download SMSmileys .deb file and install it via SHSH or iFile.

SMSmileys cydia tweak is available for free in Cydia under BigBoss repository. Upon installing the SMSmileys, there are no options to configure and no icons will be added to your homescreen.
