Apple TV to be "the biggest thing in consumer electronics since the smartphone"

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 03:32 PM PST

Even though we have a pretty good feeling that Apple is going to unveil its third ATV set top box next week, gossip is still bouncing around about Apple's full-scale television. We've been hearing rumors of an Apple TV set for several months now.

A lot of the chatter can be traced back to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The firm's resident Apple expert has been the device's biggest proponent up to this point, and now he's back with some new information…(...)

Windows 8 tablet compared to the iPad 2

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 03:10 PM PST

We know you're a devoted iOS user, but isn't it always interesting to know what goes on up in Redmond? Microsoft just released its consumer preview of Windows 8, which is designed around tablets. The lingering question of course is how it compares to the iPad. Microsoft's tablets haven't really succeeded in the past, so it will be interesting to see if Microsoft got it this time.

The Verge is ready to answer the question on our mind and has compared the iPad 2 to a Windows 8 tablet on video. The new Metro UI actually doesn't look too shabby…(...)

Here is what games will look like on a Retina display iPad

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 02:40 PM PST

A Retina display seems almost confirmed to be featured on the iPad 3, as more rumors and pictures have popped up over the past few weeks. A Retina display on the iPad 3 will be of astonishing quality. Just look at your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S screen's quality, and then picture it on the iPad. Just wow.

The guys over at Pixels on Toast have already started getting their upcoming game Food Run ready for the 2048×1536 resolution. In doing so, they have showed us what a game running on that high quality of screen looks like. And it looks amazing…(...)

New rumor claims the iPad 3 will actually be called iPad HD

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 02:17 PM PST

We know, or feel like we know, just about everything there is to know about Apple's next tablet — except its name. Most websites, including us, have just been assuming that since it will be the third iPad, it will be called the iPad 3.

But according to Gizmodo, the new device will actually be named the iPad HD. The site points to a couple of pieces of evidence to back its claims, including third-party cases and data from web traffic analytics…(...)

New Apple TV shipping March 8th?

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 01:30 PM PST

Rumors have been circling around over the past few weeks that a new Apple TV is on its way from Apple. Specifically, a report indicated that the third-generation Apple TV will be announced at Apple's media event in California, March 7th.

Today, that rumor seems to gain credibility as MacTrast discovered perhaps the shipping date for the new Apple TV, leaked unintentionally by Apple on its website. While trying to order a new Apple TV, the publication found that the current generation is out of stock, and the earliest shipping date for is March 8th…(...)

Rumor: iPad 3 to become available March 16th

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 01:14 PM PST

Now that we know when Apple will unveil its new iPad, folks are starting to speculate on what date the tablet will become available. And the most consistent guess to date seems to be Friday, March 16th.

MacRumors is the latest to add weight to the theory, pointing to a high profile Apple Store in Houston that was originally slated to debut on March 17th, but has recently been rescheduled to open a day earlier…(...)

Apple ranked the most admired company in the world, for the fifth time

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 12:51 PM PST

Apple has created quite the following over the years worldwide, specifically after the launch of the iPhone. Look at how quickly the news of Steve Jobs' death spread over social media and to mainstream media outlets — it was a matter of minutes. Everyone loves Apple.

Today, Fortune has posted its list of the world's most admired companies. And not to anyone's surprise, Apple has topped the list as the world's most admired company. Search engine Google and online retailer Amazon follow behind Apple…(...)

Want to know more about the iTweak Store? Read our exclusive interview

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 12:05 PM PST

Your one and only option for installing jailbreak applications on your iDevice these days is Cydia. It has been the undisputed installer of choice for several years now, and even if a few others – Rock, Icy – tried to make a name for themselves, Cydia has always prevailed.

We're so accustomed to Cydia that every time we hear about a potential new alternative, we get defensive very quickly. Change and competition are great, but the comfort of a househould name like Cydia is hard to break. But that's exactly what the iTweak Store aims to do.

Surfaced a couple days ago, the iTweak Store presents itself as a web based alternative to Cydia. We sat down with Kyle Pierre, one of the developers behind iTweak, to learn more about what their project is all about and why we should be on the look out for them…(...)

AT&T responds to complaints, ups throttling limit to 3GB

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 11:38 AM PST

AT&T has been under a lot of scrutiny lately due to its new data throttling practices. Last Fall, the carrier started significantly reducing the data speeds of its unlimited customers who were using more than 2GB a month.

The move prompted multiple complaints from subscribers, and even sparked a string of small claims court lawsuits. Well apparently all of the heat was too much for the carrier, as it appears it has just revamped its throttling policy…(...)

Basic guidelines:

1. This is a group of fellow users. This is not Apple. We do our best to share experiences and help others. Ask, participate, share, comment, gossip, enjoy, but leave the soapbox and sensationalism at home.

2. No spam. No advertising unless approved by the moderator. No discussion of cracks or pirating which could endanger the list.

3. No personal attacks. Offenders will be banned without warning.

4. Trim your quotes! This includes leftover Yahoo footers and signatures. Members who continually quote 60 lines, and only enter 2 of their own, may find themselves permanently moderated (or unable to post at all).

5. Please limit your signatures to 5 lines maximum, and do not post from any location which inserts legal disclaimer footers. If you cannot control this feature (by an employer, for example), please use the web site to post. Remember, this is a fully public group. Personal info in signatures, like email address and phone number, are probably best kept private. When in doubt, post without.

6. The official language of this list is English. We only make this declaration to keep things simple and prevent abuse.

In order to foil spam bots, all new members are automatically moderated. This may cause your first post to be delayed in reaching the list, but rest assured that it is worth the effort. Yahoo doesn't offer any other way to control spam, and their filtering is a joke, so this is all we have.

I have a mid 2010 MBP with 500GB hard disk. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 1TB disk, can someone tell me what 1TB disk Apple uses in other MBPs as standard ?

Also when I come to copy the data over in SuperDuper, will it matter that my disk is FileVault encrypted?

Thanks,

Andy

It's a good idea to consider a larger external drive in addition to your
existing internal drive. I use a chain of external Firewire drives
along with an internal 500gb drive. I don't care to lose all of my
data in one fell swoop.

It seems to be safe practice for me to keep my system drive on the
smaller size and store media and data externally.

I think if you look back through the threads, there was an extensive
discussion of this not too long ago.

I mean, how much data do you want to lose at one time?

Well, I work in multiple locations so I need access to my data during the day without having to lug an external disk around :-)

When I return home I have a large external drive that I make Time Machine backups to.

Mail, saving too many duplicates.

This seems a simple problem but I don't know how to solve it.

I have my gmail set up to forward automatically to MAIL in OS X. As a result I need to look only one place for my messages but - it seems to save a version of each message I compose too often! I want only the completed/sent message but I get another copy every couple of lines or words if I am distracted while writing. I am then obliged to go into MAIL and delete all but the last one.

I don't know if this is a MAIL problem or if it is caused by gmail. Does anyone else have this problem?

I barely use gmail but it sounds like some sort of auto-save gone
berserk?

If you only want to look in one place for all of your mail, it's
pretty simple to set up your gmail account within the mail app. Maybe
that will help?

Hmmm - I thought that's what I had done but maybe it's gmail that I set up. Will have to check that. Thanks.
PS - I will also have to learn to set up gmail within the mail app.

Howdy.

Apple's Mail program has a preference setting to save sent messages.

See Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors

Check the Sent section for the check box.

You may want to use your browser and login to your Google Gmail online,
then check the gear symbol and settings and then Forwarding and
POP/IMAP settings.

I also login to Gmail online about once a week and just go through the
Sent, Junk, and Trash folders and delete stuff manually. It's a good
idea to check the junk filter actions in Gmail occasional and do it
manually to be sure something isn't being junk tagged that you want to
receive.

No. The New Folder With Selection feature is built into Lion.

You have to select a group of files.

Then you have to right click (with those files still selected).

I'll send you a direct message with a screen capture showing what it
looks like.

Howdy.

It doesn't and shouldn't work with applications in the Applications
folder since these may require being in the top level of Applications
in order to work properly.

Same is true, as I think you surmised, about some of the other folders
created by the installer, however, I am able to make folders of both
folders and sub folders in several of the installer installed folder
like Pictures and Music.

I would not want to be shifting stuff in the Music folder, Library
folder, or a few other folders, since that could cause problems for the
applications that "know" of those locations.

Win 8 Preview (FWIW)

Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@me.com   hflaxman001

Wed Feb 29, 2012 6:18 pm (PST)

I attempted to install the Win 8 preview, first on a 'win ready PC' and
then on my Bootcamp partition. Both of these options are SUPPOSED to
work, however, be prepared for mucho frustration, no matter which
hardware platform you use.

I downloaded the short installer which is supposed to check to see which
hardware and software are compatible.

After it ran for over an hour on my stock 'win' pc, I killed it. It was
supposed to take 'a few minutes'. Yah, right!

I then attempted to run it while booted into my Bootcamp partition, with
the same results.

The app did not stop responding, it must just have been checking every
solder joint! That's all I can figure.

Anyway, if you've got a couple of days to waste, there are also ISO
images. I started DLing the 64 bit image. Let's see, it's been going
for about 50 minutes and I've got 266mb of 3.34GB down so far.

Is it worth it?? Not to me, that's for sure.

Windows still is...Windows, after all ! :)

(Sorry about the late response.)

VPN is commonly used in business for the reasons you say, of course, but
it's rarely mentioned here. I suppose that not too many of us need it and,
if we do, it is likely to be set up by specialists in our employers' IT
departments (security is all and the setup *must* be correct).

I'll mention, though, that OS X has built-in support for VPN PPTP and L2TP
in System Preferences > Network (10.5; might be elsewhere in other
versions).

Please get rid of the fancy stationary. It's not necessary on a discussion group. It makes digests huge and often doesn't display well on mobile devices or older computers. Regular plain text is preferred.

Are you upgraded to the latest possible version of the operating system on your device? Have you tried restarting, resetting or restoring?

Also, you might want to try enabling the Safari's Debugging Console:
Settings > Safari > Advanced > click the Debugging Console switch to "ON"

Once the Debug Console is enabled, Safari records any errors it encounters when accessing a website. A Debug Console report appears at the top of all displayed webpages.

Please remember to use plain text when you reply.

Hi, Could somebody please answer this question? Can a second-generation iPod Touch be run on 220V 50/60 Hz without a power converter? I know that I need an adapter so that I can use my American style plug with Norwegian style outlets. This is not covered in the Tech Specs on the Apple web site.

Thank you.

Mercury Learning releases second speed learning children's game for iPad - Published on 03/01/12

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mercury Learning Systems and Wood App Developers introduces Super Flash Accelerated Learning Games for Children 1.0 - Tools, their Education app that uses a rapid flashing technique to help children 0.5 - 12 years old rapidly learn and develop their full learning potential. The app is the second release of five devoted to whole-brain, speed learning for kids. In a series of flashes, a photo is followed by the tool's name written and heard with audible fact, which kids later recall.

St. Paul, Minnesota - Mercury Learning Systems with Wood Apps Developers LLC introduces Super Flash Accelerated Learning Games for Children 1.0 - Tools for iPad, their Education app that uses a rapid flashing technique to help children 0.5 - 12 years of age rapidly acquire knowledge and develop their full learning potential. The app is the second release in a series devoted to whole-brain, speed learning for kids, with this app focusing on various tools. The app provides practice in learning about different tools and instruments, together with their associated words and word sounds, while developing encyclopedic knowledge and vocabulary as well as photographic memory and rapid memory recall. Designed for young children learning English as a native or foreign language, the app has many options for various learning modes and abilities. It is also suitable for older children, as well as adults, because of its inherent educational and memory enhancement benefits.

Educational and Psychological Benefits:
* Instant tool/word/sound association and recognition
* Photographic memory and rapid memory recall
* Encyclopedic knowledge and vocabulary
* Stronger right and left brain connections (whole-brain learning)
* Increased self-esteem and positive attitude
* Ability to learn any school subject faster and better (speed learning)

In basic mode, children tap the Play button, then watch and listen as from 1 to 10 tool photos appear on the screen for about two seconds each. Between each photo, the tool's name seen as a word with its name read aloud and an audible fact about it are flashed. Then, those same tools, mixed in with several others, appear in the play area. The child finds and touches each tool/word they recall from memory to reveal a winning star. When all the tools are found and stars won, a victory page appears filled with animated stars and a positive, winning, audible voice-over affirming their success. The app features many different options for playing the game.

Feature Highlights:
* Children learn about various tools and instruments using properly designed speed-learning methods
* Uses clear, high-contrast photographs with no background (best for brain development and memory retention)
* Play using one or more of the following flashing methods: tools, names, audible names, and audible facts
* Find game (helps activate instant memory recall)
* Auto-scoring
* 1-4 player mode
* 1-10 flashing objects per round
* Fast-play instructions
* Viewable/printable instructions for playing the game in many different ways
* Information about this accelerated learning method
* Two sizes of 160 printable playing cards with interesting facts on the backs (optional extra)
* Printable game charts to log your child's learning progress (optional extra)
* Five printable accelerated learning award certificates to present to your children as they excel with the games (optional extra)
* Play objects from one set at a time or from all sets (80 objects total)

Created by Brad C. Davis, producer of multiple award-winning Memory Magic Accelerated Learning Games for Children and owner of Mercury Learning Systems LLC with Wood App Developers LLC, the app utilizes scientifically proven, accelerated learning techniques inspired by experts in whole-brain education and child development. Brad stated, "The goal of these early learning apps is to enhance what is referred to as whole-brain learning, by stimulating right-brain functions through a rapid flashing technique, then strengthening those pathways to left-brain functions through memory recall. When both types of learning methods are used in a fun game environment, speed learning can take place and children can develop abilities that make learning any school subject faster and easier with greater memory retention."

Awards (CD version of same game):
* Top Choice Award from the Boston Museum of Science
* Excellence in Education Award from the Education Clearing House
* Perfect 10 from GameZones KidZone
* All Green Lights from the National Institute on Media and the Family

"Most early learning games for children use unrealistic imagery and audio or too much visual stimulation. These stimuli inhibit a young child's ability to form proper perceptions of what tools look like in reality and can block their full learning ability," stated Brad Davis, head of Mercury Learning Systems LLC. "Our early learning memory games are designed using proper imagery and stimulation methods that can naturally release your child's genius abilities."

Device Requirements:
* Compatible with iPad
* Requires iOS 3.2 or later (iOS 5 tested)
* 85.3 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Super Flash Accelerated Learning Games for Children - Tools 1.0 is free and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Education category. Unlocking all the optional extras requires an in-app purchase of $1.99 (USD). Review copies are available on request.

Not A Basement Studio was started in January 2010 when Ken Luong, Khoa Nguyen, and Hieu Tran were getting bored with the university's curriculum and WoW's raiding nights. Being avid manga fan, they looked to the App Store for something to cure their boredom. That's when the idea for our first app came about. Four months of hard work and countless (actually 120) sleepless nights, Manga Rock, a manga reader for the iPhone, was released. Greeted with much love, and hate, the app received close to one million download on the app store. Two years later, joined by more like-minded and passionate people, we are now making awesome apps for the iOS App Store, making life better, one app at a time. Animation Desk for iOS Updates to Offer New Creative Way of Storytelling - Published on 02/29/12

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kdan Mobile today announces a major update for both the iPhone and the iPad versions of Animation Desk, offering users a new and creative way of storytelling. This award-winning drawing and animation app helps its users flesh out ideas into e-cards, storyboards, and animation projects. Now with enhanced audio capabilities and upgraded stamp features, Animation Desk makes it easier to create digital story books or short-length animated films that will grab the attention of a wider audience.

Tainan, Taiwan - Kdan Mobile today is thrilled to announce a significant update for both the iPhone and the iPad versions of Animation Desk, offering animation hobbyists a new and creative way of storytelling.

Animation Desk is renowned for its elegant interface and powerful animation functionality, as pointed out by the prestigious review site, AppAdvice. To further extend the app's abilities, its latest edition supports audio import and recording, so users can add background music, sound effects, and narrations to spice up their works. With the help of flexible audio support, users can easily turn an animated story into a visual and audio delight.

Another highlight of the newest version is the enhanced stamp tool. This patented gadget not only provides an easy option for users to copy, paste, and insert pictures, but it can also transfer patterns of a picture on to the drawing canvas. Users can quickly create an animated figure or a background element of a story. The stamp features largely reduce redraw time and thus allow users to focus on making slight changes among different frames. It also helps parents and teachers to make one-of-a-kind animated storybooks that appeal to young viewers.

Winning the title of the Best in the Entertainment Category of App Store Rewind 2011, Animation Desk has established itself as an inspiring tool for people to explore creativity and imagination. "We would like to thank the App Store editorial team for giving us this honor. We will continue to do what we are best at to benefit the lives of our users," remarked Kenny Su, CEO of Kdan Mobile. Su also announced that the next update of Animation Desk is expected to hit the market in late March to celebrate the company's three year anniversary.

CollabraCam 1.5 - Major Update Not Compatible with Previous Versions

Posted by: "prMac Mailer" prservices@prmac.com

Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:01 am (PST)

CollabraCam 1.5 - Major Update Not Compatible with Previous Versions - Published on 02/29/12

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CollabraCam streams video from up to four iOS cameras over local Wi-Fi to a fifth device for the director to view and edit a video in real-time, all while allowing the director to silently communicate camera moves or angles to any camera operators to get the perfect shots. When the director calls it a wrap, all of the clips are transferred to the director's device and assembled into the final movie with automatically generated credits.

Grand Rapids, Michigan - Apptopus, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of a major point release update to CollabraCam.

The update version 1.5 is a rewrite of the majority of the app to provide a more stable and reliable experience with higher quality results. It is such a significant update that it is not compatible with previous versions of CollabraCam! Additionally, CollabraCam 2.0 is in the works with a redesigned user interface and some great new features, so stay tuned!

CollabraCam provides a quick, easy and fun way to shoot and simultaneously edit video from multiple cameras on-the-fly with friends, family or colleagues using iPhones, iPod touches and iPad 2. CollabraCam links iOS devices running the app over local Wi-Fi to create a simple yet powerful video switching control room. As the director, a user can view, record and edit from up to four live-streaming iOS cameras in real-time while also having the ability to silently cue the operators of standby or recording cameras to perform pan, track, dolly or tilt camera moves or request a high or low angle.

CollabraCam is defining the future of collaborative mobile video production by enabling groups to collectively capture an edited video live. Imagine a crew at the little league championship game ... bottom of the ninth, all tied up with two outs and a runner at second. Camera operators at first, third and behind home plate with the fourth roaming the crowd while the director monitors and records from the stands on an iPad. The director records Camera 3 behind home plate as the batter hits a fly ball that drops into left field, switches to Camera 1 as the batter takes first, then cues Camera 2 to pan right before switching to it as the runner from second rounds third and the outfielder guns it for home, then switches back to Camera 3 as the runner leaps over the catcher to score the winning run, and switches to Camera 4 as the crowd goes wild!

Joint Venture Between BBP Creations and WWIS On 33 iBooks - Published on 03/01/12

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BBP Creations has partnered with Water Works Industry Solutions to create 33 educational iBooks for the waterworks industry. WWIS currently sells 33 different training DVDs for the waterworks industry focusing on underground water and sewer pipe installations. Each book will contain prerequisites, definitions, the common use of that particular training, the main training installation video, a 3D animated video review, the video transcripts, multiple choice review with video and a glossary.

Reno, Nevada - Big Ben Parliament Creations (BBP Creations) has partnered with Water Works Industry Solutions (WWIS) to create 33 educational iBooks for the waterworks industry. A joint venture has been established between both companies for this project. WWIS currently sells 33 different training DVDs for the waterworks industry focusing on underground water and sewer pipe installations.

"We felt that this was a great opportunity to advance our training into easier, more affordable and globally accessible apps with the new iBook 2," stated Nicholas Reviglio, co-owner of WWIS. "This joint venture is exciting for our company as it will allow us to reach more people with our educational series. This isn't just for waterworks operators. Our training shows how to fix problems that you can have in your own backyard."

BBP Creations will be releasing the first iBook of the series, "Mechanical Joint Installation for Ductile Iron Pipe," in April 2012. "We will be releasing one iBook a month with WWIS, the first few being the most requested trainings," stated Aurelia Goodfellow, Head of Marketing for BBP Creations. "This partnership has allowed us to expand into the new iBook 2 educational format. These are great training resources for everyone especially when a natural disaster hits and water pipes need to be repaired quickly. These iBooks will showcase the training that WWIS has prepared in a hands on approach that anyone can understand and use in an emergency situation, anywhere in the world. What better way to do that than on an iPad."

With the new iBook 2, each book will contain prerequisites, definitions, the common use of that particular training, the main training installation video, a 3D animated video review, the video transcripts, multiple choice review with video and a glossary. "We have offered our training on DVDs since 2006, but were limited to the countries outside of the USA that we could ship to affordably. With the iPad, we can be 100% global and everyone who owns an iPad can purchase our training and within seconds have it available for a job site or for classroom training," stated Reviglio.

iSticky for iOS and OS X - Reborn as Real-time Sticky Note Sharing A

Posted by: "prMac Mailer" prservices@prmac.com

iSticky for iOS and OS X - Reborn as Real-time Sticky Note Sharing App - Published on 03/01/12

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Xinfinite and Yaranga today introduce iSticky 1.0 for iOS and iSticky 4.0 for OS X, their Productivity app that stores user's notes on iSticky's Cloud server for easy access on multiple devices. The new release for iOS integrates with the OS X version, supports push notifications, allows users to create note lists, share lists with other users, specify list permissions, encrypt note lists, and send notes to other users.

Gouda, Netherlands - Xinfinite and Yaranga today are proud to introduce iSticky 1.0 for iOS and iSticky 4.0 for OS X, a note application that stores user's notes on iSticky's Cloud server for easy access on multiple devices. After eight years as a successful OS X application, iSticky has been completely overhauled and has become available for the iOS platform as well. This useful Productivity application now includes the implementation of push notifications, facilitating real-time communication and alerts. It allows users to create note lists, share lists with other users, specify list permissions, encrypt note lists, and send notes to other users. iSticky can be used on multiple iOS and Mac OS X devices, with easy communication between the iOS and OS X versions.

iSticky lets users send an infinite number of sticky notes to themselves and others, providing a quick, real-time solution for sending important information like reminders, updates, directions, meeting times, dinner plans, meet-up changes, or any other individual or group note. iSticky provides a fast and organized way to send notes, at home, in school, on the road, or in the office.

iSticky is a great solution for:
* Teams: to create real-time to-do lists
* Companies with employees on the road: to give them the latest information or orders
* Colleagues: to send quick reminders instead of sending emails or sticking paper notes on desks
* Families: to send quick reminders, menus, honey-do lists, and other important information

Users may become connected with other users, allowing sharing of notes organized in lists. Current users send an invitation to the email address of the person they wish to connect with. If this email address is already registered as an iSticky user, the user will see an invitation in the iSticky app. If the email address is not registered as an iSticky user, iSticky will send an email with the invitation to purchase iSticky and connect to the user who sent the invitation. People can accept a connection invite, decline to become connected, or delete a connection any time.

Once connected, users may share notes and lists with other connected users. The owner of the list may specify the permissions of other users. iSticky also allows users to send notes outside of a permitted list to a specific connected user. These notes will automatically appear in the General list. The General list is a static feature of iSticky and cannot be deleted or encrypted. The connected user, if allowing push notifications, will receive an alert to the note.

Feature Highlights:
* Easy to use note sharing
* Notes and list stored on iSticky's Cloud server, enabling access on multiple devices at all times
* Supports Apple's Push Notification Service allowing for instant notifications
* Share notes and lists with connected users
* Connect with users through invites and specify list permissions among users
* Seamless integration between devices and users
* Note encryption options
* Send notes to other users

iSticky notes are ordered in color-coded lists a user can create. The notes will be displayed beneath the list header. Users can rearrange notes, e.g., the most important notes may be placed at the top of a list.

Once a list has been created, all connected users may add notes to the list. Each note is tagged with the name of the user who created the note and the date the note was created or last modified. After notes are created, they may be edited or deleted. If a user is not connected to the Internet when a note is created or edited, the note will be placed in the queue until the next time an Internet connection is established.

Users can ensure the privacy of notes of certain lists by encrypting them with 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard or AES encryption. If an encrypted list is shared, connected users must have the password in order to read the notes of a list. To prevent other people from reading the user's notes, iSticky for iOS offers the option of setting a passcode to get access to the app.

iSticky makes use of Apple's Push Notification Service, allowing users to be updated to any changes and additions to notes and lists. Changes are immediately pushed to all the users who need to know. If a user changes a note of a shared list, this change will be communicated immediately to all the users who are members of that list. This feature is integrated between iSticky OS X and iSticky iOS, allowing notification of notes changed on a Mac computer to be sent to an iOS device within seconds.

"iSticky brings you fast, real-time note sharing. With notes stored on our Cloud server, you will never be without vital information," stated Yaranga's Arie Pieter Cammeraat. "No more losing important information on tiny scraps of paper. iSticky has revolutionized the sticky note."

Verto Studio 3D 1.0 for OS X - Popular 3D Design App for iPad Now on Mac - Published on 03/01/12

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Independent developer Michael L. Farrell today introduces Verto Studio 3D 1.0 for Mac, his full-featured, 3D modeling app originally created for iPad. The app supports import of OBJ and 36 other file formats, allowing users to download thousands of wire mesh models or create their own. Powerful enough for professionals doing mobile 3D content creation and easy enough for beginners, it features 3D modeling, dynamic lighting, texture mapping, iOS/OS X file sharing and Multi-Touch-Gestures in Lion.

San Diego, California - Independent developer Michael L. Farrell today is pleased to introduce Verto Studio 3D 1.0 for Mac, his full-featured, 3D modeling app originally created for iPad. The app supports import of OBJ, 3ds Max 3DS, Blender 3D, AutoCAD DXF and 33 other 3D file formats, allowing users to download thousands of available wire mesh models, or create their own. Powerful enough for professionals doing mobile 3D content creation, and simple enough for beginning modelers, Verto Studio 3D combines sophisticated 3D modeling, lighting, and texture mapping with a GUI that works with a mouse or Lion's Multi-Touch trackpad. Considering its unprecedented ability to import 37 different 3D file formats, the diminutive 9.5 MB app (which offers real-time Gouraud shading, dynamic lighting, self illumination, vertex editing, multiple camera angles, and an innovative Auto mode for manipulating every object in the scene simultaneously) now offers a pipeline, via email or Dropbox, for the
conversion of almost any 3D file into a Verto Studio 3D Mobile file for iPhone or iPad.

Feature Highlights:
* OBJ file import/export
* Verto Studio file format support and exchange via email or Dropbox
* Drag & drop Objects - Plane, Cube, Sphere, Torus, Terrain Generator (height field), and 3D Sketch tool
* Mesh generation
* Mesh augmentation - Polygon Extrusion, Polygon Subdivision, and Texture Coordinate Editor
* Editing features - Vertex Translation/Rotation/Scaling, Mirror, Material Editor, Texture Mapping, Lighting Editor, and Undo
* Multiple Camera Views - Top, Bottom, Left, Right, Front, Back, and Free
* Orthographic projection mode for engineering and CAD applications
* Real-time Gouraud shading and rendering of texture maps, including FSAA
* Real-time scaling, moving, rotating, panning, and auto scene re-orientation
* Multiple document interface allows opening as many scene files as desired simultaneously
* Drag and drop texturing
* Scenes can be appended to merge multiple files into one

Just as impressive as its smooth, real-time rendering, display, and manipulation of computationally intensive three-dimensional models (employing Hardware Full Scene Anti-Aliasing), is the app's economical interface. Users familiar with popular 3D applications like Maya or Blender are acquainted with their complex, confusing tools, menus, controls, and input fields. Verto Studio 3D employs only 11 simple buttons in the upper tab bar of the modeling window. Six buttons in a group control movement: Auto, Pan, Move, Rotate, Scale, and Select. None of these opens a window that would block the view. Instead, the user touches a button and then performs that action directly using a mouse or Multi-Touch-Gestures. For more precise control, another button opens the corresponding window for the chosen tool. For example, having chosen the Scale Tool the user may work directly on the screen, or open the Scale Tool window, which allows precision, numerical adjustment of X, Y, and Z scaling.

The five remaining buttons include: Add Object, Configure Tool, Object List, Object Editor, and Inspector. The Add Object drop-down menu lists the following: Plane, Sketch, Cube, Sphere, Terrain, Torus, and Light. Configure Tool complements the Move, Rotate, and Scale functions and opens a dialog box containing three empty number fields, which confers absolute, numerical control. The Object List is a simple, touch to select, drop-down list of every object and light source in the scene. With any object selected, the Object Editor drop-down menu provides complete control over vertices, meshes, triangles, and features such as extrusion. With any light or object selected, the Inspector window provides comprehensive control over lighting type, position, direction, intensity, angle, attenuation, color, etc. And with any object selected, the Inspector provides full control over how the object interacts with Ambient, Diffuse, Specular, and Self-Emitted Light, as well as numerical control of
Texture Maps, Wrapping, and Tiling.

Most of the important functions are available from the modeling Window, but several are found in the drop-downs of the menu bar: Undo, Camera View, Select, and Open/Save/Export capabilities. Undo permits an unlimited number of undo actions. The Camera View allows the six standard views plus a variable view, and either normal perspective or orthogonal projection may be chosen. Select allows selection of None, All, or Inverse of Objects. Open/Save/Export allows the user to open 37 different 3D file formats, Save any scene as a native file, Append a scene file, and Export as an OBJ or native Verto Studio 3D file.

File Formats Supported:
Collada (.dae), Blender 3D (.blend), 3ds Max 3DS (.3ds), 3ds Max, ASE (.ase), Wavefront Object (.obj), Stanford Polygon Library (.ply), AutoCAD DXF (.dxf), LightWave (.lwo), Modo (.lxo), Stereolithography (.stl), AC3D (.ac), Milkshape 3D (.ms3d), TrueSpace (.cob,.scn), Valve Model (.smd,.vta), Quake I Mesh (.mdl), Quake II Mesh (.md2), Quake III Mesh (.md3), Quake III BSP (.pk3), Return to Castle Wolfenstein (.mdc), Doom 3 (.md5*), Biovision BVH (.bvh), CharacterStudio Motion (.csm), DirectX X (.x), BlitzBasic 3D (.b3d), Quick3D (.q3d, .q3s), Ogre XML (.mesh.xml), Irrlicht Mesh (.irrmesh), Irrlicht Scene (.irr), Neutral File Format (.nff), Sense8 WorldToolKit (.nff), Object File Format (.off), PovRAY Raw (.raw), Terragen Terrain (.ter), 3D GameStudio (.mdl), 3D GameStudio Terrain (.hmp), and Izware Nendo (.ndo)

Because the app opens a remarkable variety of 3D file formats, users may exploit the many thousands of objects already modeled and available through on-line libraries and services. Readily downloadable are easily constructed models with relatively few vertexes, such as geometric shapes and simple objects like books or computer monitors. In addition, highly complex models such as spacecraft, houses, people, animals, and plants are also available. All models may be edited to the user's requirements. For 3D veterans and newbies alike, Verto Studio 3D offers an intuitive, inexpensive solution for three-dimensional content creation.

According to independent developer Michael L. Farrell, "My goal in creating Verto Studio 3D for iPad was two-fold; first, to introduce casual users of the iPad to the incredible creative possibilities of 3D modeling; and second, to provide a tool for experienced modelers to demonstrate ideas and designs anytime, anywhere, on their iPad. Apple was so impressed with the app that they featured it in a multi-national TV commercial. Now, with Verto Studio 3D for the Mac, users have a simple, practical 3D app that produces great results without a steep learning curve. And projects can be easily moved back and forth between their iDevice and their Mac."

System Requirements:
* Mac OS X 10.6 or later
* 4.9 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Verto Studio 3D 1.0 for OS X is available now at the introductory price of $24.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the Mac App Store in the Productivity category. Normal pricing of $49.99 will take effect shortly. Review copies are available on request.

Angry Planes - NYC Accountant turns Developer - Launches App

Angry Planes - NYC Accountant turns Developer - Launches App - Published on 03/01/12

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BAM Entertainment LLC today introduces Angry Planes 1.0, its new gaming title for iOS devices. Featuring simple and intuitive controls, Angry Planes offers superb pick-up and playability. Users must drop bombs from their Angry Plane onto swimming squid below, bombing a designated number of squid before time and bombs run out. Version 1.0 features 90 levels that progressively unlock, and combined with a '3 Star' rating system, A.P. provides high replay value and countless hours of gameplay.

New York, New York - With over half a million Apps currently live in the App Store, it's hard enough to simply get noticed ... nevermind produce a top 25 app. Many of these 'blockbuster' apps are developed by well known, experienced developers; most of which are companies with dedicated resources. However, one of the 'small guys' is trying to break that mould, and has made a bold run for it with the introduction of Angry Planes to the App Store.

Biagio Iellimo is the founder of BAM Entertainment LLC, the new developer of this full feature 2D action/strategy game. An accountant living and working in the craziness of New York City's financial world, Biagio is BAM's single employee. When asked about how Angry Planes came to fruition, this is what he had to say, "I'm a complete 'techy', and have always been a fan of all things Apple. It's been my dream to release an app since the day the App Store went live. For the past 18 months, I crunched numbers during the day, anxiously waiting to get home to work on Angry Planes at night. Developing has become my true interest/passion, and I've put everything into this app to make a game that is truly unique, interesting, and fun. I am extremely excited about introducing it to the Apple Community!"

Angry Planes brings back the essence of what mobile games were originally all about: simple and addictive with that pick-up and play ability so you can fully enjoy the game whether you have 30 seconds or 30 hours to spare. Version 1.0 features 90 levels that progressively unlock, and combined with a '3 Star' rating system, A.P. provides high replay value and countless hours of gameplay.

To pass each level, users must drop bombs from their Angry Plane onto swimming squid below, bombing a designated number of squid before time and bombs run out. To make things challenging, there are color-changing squid that require multiple hits to kill, they swim in different speeds/patterns on every level, and obstacles in the water provide the squid ample bomb cover and hiding spots.

The controls are simple and intuitive - left/right arrows at the bottom of the screen make the plane speed up/slow down as it continuously flies from side to side. A single red bomb button completes the controls, dropping one bomb with each tap. Timing becomes the name of the game, as users cannot change the direction of their plane on demand. If they fly past the squid below, they must get to the end of the screen in order to turn around. The combination of timing the plane's speed with dropping bombs onto moving targets below can be what Biagio describes as the "most gratifying or frustrating fun you'll ever have...either way you'll be hooked to this app quickly!".

Angry Planes' graphics are polished and gameplay is extremely smooth. There are different planes to choose from, as well as bonus characters such as submarines and sharks, which have special features that enhance gameplay. It's Game Center enabled, and users can compete on multiple online leaderboards to see who can eliminate the most squid.

Device Requirements:
*iPhone 3GS or higher, iPod touch 3rd generation or higher, iPad 1 or 2
*Requires iOS 4.0 or higher
*16 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Angry Planes 1.0 is available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Games category. There are 4 versions available: iPhone/iPod touch Free and Paid ($0.99), and iPad Free and Paid ($1.99).

There is a new Mophie Snap Air out that is only being sold at the apple store for the iPhone 4 and 4s. I was just wondering if anyone is able to give a review on this item?

The only Mophie Air that is in the Apple Store was the same Mophie Air that Best Buy sells and also available on Amazon, even though the Apple Store says it is an Apple exclusive.

Cuba Trip with AT&T iPhone 4S GSM

Guys,
I am taking a trip to Cuba (Holguin) the end of March. I have an with AT&T
iPhone 4S with GSM
Will internet work on the phone?
Will cellular work on the phone?
I can swap out SIMS down there?

I also heard a company called Cubacel at the airport. They rent phones and sell some kind of service. Has anyone used this company? I would rather use my iPhone. Yes I know Cuba is under an embargo.

Thanks Tom

Internet and Cellular will work on the phone overseas though you would have to call AT&T to see if they have roaming agreements in Cuba. This is a special situation due to the US embargo to the island.

Unless you have an unlocked 4S, you won't be able to swap out SIMS.

Note that while you can get 'reasonable' phone rates - ranging from $0.99 per minute and up. The roaming data rates are extremely high so I would recommend turning data roaming off and using WIFI where available to get internet access.

Not sure what's going on but just recently on my iPhone 4 when making calls the mute and speaker buttons seems to be getting touched by my face or ear and turning on and off. Don't recall this ever happening before.

Any fix?

It sounds like the proximity sensor is not sensing your head. It is supposed to turn off the screen when you hold the phone up to your head. The sensor is just above the speaker (that's above the screen). Have you recently put a screen protector on your phone? The screen protector I have has a cut out so the proximity sensor isn't blocked.

It may just be bad because there is no screen protector on it.

Try testing it out, make a phone call then put your finger over the sensor, see if the screen blanks.

The AudiOffice dock turns an iPad or iPhone into an office phone

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 04:41 PM PST

It turns out that there are more things being announced at Mobile World Congress than just hundreds of new cookie-cutter Android phones, and some of them are even pretty interesting. Some of those are iPhone accessories, with one in particular catching our eye.

The AudiOffice dock from Invoxia not only looks absolutely gorgeous, but it also fulfills a real purpose, especially if you're a business type who finds themselves tethered to their desk.

What the AudiOffice offers is actually pretty simple: it turns an iPhone or iPad into a desktop office phone, complete with corded handset and speakerphone options…(...)

MLB At Bat 2012 now available for iOS

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 02:05 PM PST

This year, the MLB is doing things a bit different with the way its viewers can watch games on their mobile devices. Today, the new MLB At Bat 2012 app hit the App Store, available on both the iPhone and iPad, Fox News notes. In previous years, the cost was $15 for each app — which totaled $30 for a viewer who wanted the experience on both the iPhone and iPad.

The new version of MLB At Bat is now available for free, but you can get more features with a $15 season pass…(...)

SkyBet now accepting bets on iPad 3 specs

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 01:45 PM PST

After months of rumors, Apple has finally confirmed that there is a new iPad on the way. The company sent out media invitations yesterday to what we can only assume is its iPad 3 event next week in San Francisco.

At this point, you might feel like you know everything about Apple's new tablet. The Retina display is practically a sure thing, as are improved processors and higher resolution cameras. But are you confident enough about these predictions to put money on them?(...)

Apple blocking eBooks that link to Amazon?

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 01:11 PM PST

Seth Godin is reporting that Apple is rejecting eBooks submitted to the iBookstore that contain a link to Amazon. Godin experienced the blockage first-hand, after Apple rejected his eBook for containing "multiple links to Amazon store."

The links to Amazon were found in the bibliography of his new book Stop Selling Dreams, where Godin linked to Amazon using its affiliate program, so readers could locate books he has published. These types of practices could lead to a closed eBook market…(...)

More evidence surfaces of upcoming Apple TV refresh

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 11:15 AM PST

Yesterday, 9to5Mac reported that it had heard from reliable sources that Apple was on the verge of releasing a new Apple TV. The site claimed that there's a good chance that we could see the product unveiled alongside the new iPad next week.

The report makes sense, considering the previous proof we've seen that an ATV refresh was on the way. But in case you needed any more convincing, AppleInsider has uncovered some new evidence…(...)

Unofficial factory unlock service for iPhone CutYourSim is back

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 08:49 AM PST

CutYourSim, the unofficial official service that offers permanent factory unlocks for a variety of devices, has started proposing factory unlocks for the iPhone 4S and other models.

The company gained in popularity last year when it was one of the first to offer that type of service, until Apple cracked down on them and similar services that had been flourishing all over the net, forcing them to stop their activity.

But it looks like CutYourSim figured out how to get around those restrictions, as the company announced this morning that it is now taking orders for official and permanent unlock solutions for iPhones…(...)

The BlackBerry loses another government agency to the iPhone

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 08:01 AM PST

Research In Motion is having a bit of a hard time of late. Their BlackBerry brand of smartphones are seeing slower sales than the Canadian firm is accustomed to, and the company's PlayBook tablet is floundering at best.

Business across the globe are dropping BlackBerry as their smartphone handset and business software provider in droves, and now it appears that there is another nail being driven into the RIM coffin, with the news that The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is dropping BlackBerry in favor of the iPhone.

The ATF's Chief Information Office claims that the agency is going to "delete the BlackBerry form the mix," which cannot be good reading for RIM's latest CEO…(...)

The invites themselves, which feature a picture of what most believe to be Apple's new tablet, have sparked some interesting conversations throughout the web as pundits attempt to identify Apple's embedded clues.

But there's one particular element of the photo that has everyone perplexed: where is the iPad's Home button?(...)
